Iodized formulations have a number of uses. They have been successfully applied in various sectors such as pharmaceuticals, tire and animal feeds production. In each case, they are combined with different elements to form iodine derivatives. There are countless compounds and each has unique usage. The below sections explain several uses.

Manufacturers of display devices made of Liquid Crystal Display also referred to as LCD need iodates. To function properly, liquid crystals must be triggered by electricity. Once the triggering happens, the iodized formulation is needed to dope polarizing displays. Without this, light emanating from the backlight cannot be polarized in one direction. Similarly, LCD cannot display any contact without a single direction polarization. Laptops, digital watches, television, and some calculators depend on LCD technology.

The next usage is in human. Most foodstuffs that are consumed by people contain iodates. Most commonly, this element is found in sodium chloride. Medical specialists recommend that every meal should have a certain amount of salt not to just improve the taste but also provide iodide elements. Once this is consumed, it is stored in thyroid glands. The brain and nervous system require iodates for proper functioning.

The amount of this mineral in salt is not adequate to meet human needs. This is why researchers came up with an alternative method to increase intake. Today, animal feeds are also combined with iodine-compounds. Thus, when individuals consume meat, it also has some amount of iodide. Notably, animals do not require these compounds. Such animals include cows, goats, pigs, and poultry.

Car tires can heat up to a temperature of 175 degrees centigrade. Overheating greatly affects their lifespan. Iodates are used in the manufacturing process to stabilize them. To begin with, specific iodized elements are used in making Nylon. Nylon is the actual component that prevents overheating and thus improve the durability of wheels.

Iodides are also essential in manufacturing certain drugs. It is an active ingredient of numerous varieties of drugs such as coronary vasodilators, neuromuscular blocking agents and antispasmodics. Differently, organic compounds act as intermediate elements in the production of certain products. These are antibiotics, corticosteroids, and UV-B absorbers.

A lot of research has been carried out to find out how iodized salts can be used to grow healthy crops. Apparently, like animals, plants do not need iodates. However, soluble iodized salts can be used in soil fertilization. When these mix with soil, they help in the production of biomass content that is rich in different nutrients. It also raises the level of antioxidants in plants which is essential in helping them remain healthy during a dry spell. When vegetables are treated with iodate fertilizers, they are healthier to consume.

One of the main causes of poor crop production is pathogens such as bacteria. They infect plants with diseases such as blight in potatoes. Spraying affected crops with formulations like Iodophors kills these microorganisms. Hypo iodide is a perfect solution for fungal diseases. These two work differently. Iodophors penetrate through the cells of pathogens while hypo iodide disrupts fungal proteins.
